Audition Requirements / Information

Oiler Marching Band
  • There are no formal auditions for the Oiler Marching Band. All students are welcome.
    • The Oiler Marching Band is a FULL MARCHING BAND open to woodwinds, brass, percussion (INCLUDING FRONT ENSEMBLE!), color guard, and twirler students. Interested guitarists and bass guitarists are encouraged to contact Dr. Wes King for more information.
    • Students are asked to send a video of themselves playing something from their current ensemble (Fight Song, stand tune, concert band music, Solo & Ensemble music, etc.) to be assessed for part placement.
    • Videos should be emailed to Dr. King at [email protected]
  • Drumline students will work with UF's Drumline Instructor, Mr. Rob Ciesluk, to be placed on the Oiler Drumline.
  • Prospective twirlers and majorettes will work with UF's Majorette Instructor, Ms. Tabitha Kirsch, to be placed on the Oilerettes or to audition as a UF Feature Twirler.
  • Prospective color guard students will work with UF's Color Guard Instructor, Ms. Mariah Schroeder, to be placed on the UF Color Guard line.

Scholarship Info
Concert Band Scholarship Auditions:
  • Students may participate in the UF Symphonic Band without an audition.
  • Students wishing to pursue a UF Concert Band Scholarship (regardless of placement) and/or participation in the UF Wind Ensemble need to submit a recorded audition video by August 20, 2025.
    • Auditions include two prepared excerpts and a full-range chromatic scale. 
      • Percussion have one mallet excerpt and one snare drum excerpt. Chromatic scale should be performed on mallets.
  • Students pursuing the Concert Band Scholarship need to fulfill three requirements:
    • Sign up for the course.
    • Sign up for a private lesson course on their instrument.
      • Students are awarded a secondary scholarship to cover the cost of the course fee for lessons (free private lessons!)
    • Complete the audition process. 

Jazz Ensemble Auditions:
  • Scholarships for Jazz Ensemble are limited. Students are required to audition using the same process as the Concert Band Scholarship auditions above. Students wishing to participate in both concert band and jazz ensemble only have to complete one audition.
  • Rhythm section students will set up separate auditions by emailing Dr. King at [email protected].

Oiler Pep Band:
  • Students currently in a band ensemble do not have to audition and should sign up for the course.
  • Students who have not previously participated in another UF ensemble need to submit a video recording of themselves playing something from their previous experience by December 1, 2025 to be considered for membership.
    • Videos should be emailed to Dr. King at [email protected].
